Biography

Katrina Adams, Ph.D., received her doctorate in molecular biology from the University of California, Los Angeles where she used pluripotent stem cells to study motor neuron development. She currently investigates signaling pathways that regulate neural stem and progenitor cell maintenance and differentiation in the developing postnatal and adult brain, with a focus on the Endothelin-1 pathway. She is interested in understanding how stem and progenitor cells respond to disease or injury, such as in Multiple Sclerosis, with the hope of identifying new therapeutic targets.

Biography

Premature babies are susceptible to diffuse white matter injury caused by oxygenation failure. Dr. Goldstein’s research focuses on how environmental stimuli can treat the dysmaturation of cerebral white matter. Using a postnatal rodent hypoxia paradigm that models human preterm birth, he recently demonstrated that environmental enrichment — a setting with increased levels of cognitive, physical and social stimulation — ameliorates oligodendrocyte dysmaturation and promotes myelination and functional recovery. Current work will uncover precise molecular mechanisms responsible for the environmental enrichment-induced recovery from diffuse white matter injury.

Biography

Dr. Sathyanesan’s primary research interest focuses on the question: How does developmental disruption in neonates - due to injury or genetic causes - alter cerebellar circuitry and cerebellum-dependent behavior? He uses advanced behavioral quantification, in vivo physiology (Ca2+ imaging and fiber photometry), and functional manipulation (optogenetics and chemogenetics) to answer this question in preclinical models of neonatal brain injury and Down syndrome. Dr. Sathyanesan joined the Gallo lab as a postdoctoral fellow in 2015, following his doctoral training in sensory neuroscience with Dr. Weihong Lin at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. His undergraduate background is in bioengineering from Bharathidasan University, India.
